The Anthropocene, a geological epoch defined as human influenced, is not merely a consequence of our past and current disregard for nature, climate and the environment, it also represents a potential trajectory towards human downfall.1 Rajni Perera’s solo exhibition Rajni Perera. Futures at Musée d’art de Joliette (MAJ) brought this theme to our attention. In recent years, Perera (b. 1985), a national from Sri Lanka, has carved a reputation as one of Canada’s leading contemporary artists. Her interdisciplinary practice includes painting, sculpture and photography, which she uses to express her vision of imagined futures in which mutated subjects exist in dystopian realms.
